Chapter Six
There was nothing Arden liked more than waking up with a warm, naked body in bed next to him. It was even better when that delicious body belonged to someone he actually cared about. And despite his momentary misgivings about whether a sweet, society lady, like Patience, deserved to have a rake with a ruined reputation thrust himself upon herâquite literallyâas he woke up to a cool breeze billowing his curtains and the chirp of birds outside his window, he was happy to find her naked body burrowed against his.
Sheâd stayed. Patience had stayed through the night. Sheâd stayed despite the danger to her reputation, if theyâd been found together. Judging by the fact that the fire in his grate was already lit, the servants of the house already knew sheâd spent the night in his bed. Patience could easily have crept out after heâd fallen asleep, as numerous bed partners had done before. He did have a tendency to fall asleep the moment he was spent, if only for a few minutes. Too many of his conquests had taken those moments to flee from him. Some of them with his wallet, or a bauble to remember him by.
Arden drew in a breath and smiled, then shifted to his side so that he could spoon Patience as she slept on. It occurred to him that Patience was everything his heart had always secretly desired. She was artless and unaware of her own charms. She looked outward at the world and all its curiosities instead of focusing in on herself and her vanity. She was learned and could hold a conversation as well as any Oxford scholar. And she was bold enough to think that she was the one who had seduced him instead of the other way around.
At least, he thought she had believed herself to be in control the night before. They hadnât actually spoken since the moment heâd pulled her away from the door and ravished her. For all he knew, she thought heâd importuned her and she was angry with him for the violation.
But if she was angry, that didnât explain why she had spent the night slumbering in his arms. It didnât explain why she drew in a breath and stretched with sinful grace against him as she came awake instead of startling and fleeing his bed. And it most definitely did not explain the contented smile that spread across her sleepy face as she twisted in his arms so that she could lie facing him.
âGood morning,â she purred, her eyes still half closed.
âGood morning to you, my sweet angel,â Arden said, giddy at the sweet way he spoke to her, and stroked his fingers over her warm cheek. He was never like this with any of his lovers. Most of them understood that their evening had been purely transactional, without a lick of sentiment to it.
Speaking of lickingâ¦.
He rolled Patience to her back and took advantage of her groggy state to slip low enough to rake his tongue over one of her breasts, then to draw her nipple into his mouth.
